Meet Dr. Lindsey Calvert-Downey
Hi, I am Dr. Lindsey Calvert-Downey! I have been the proud owner of Maplewood Wellness Center since July 2009 (formerly known as Chiropractic Physiotherapy Clinic).
I made the choice to become a chiropractor after being a patient myself for many years. I first began seeing a chiropractor at the age of 14 after sustaining several injuries while showing horses. From that day forward, chiropractic care became an integral part of my life as an athlete. Routine care allowed me to perform at the highest level and maintain my health.
As I completed my undergraduate studies, I was uncertain what my next step should be. Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to help people. Aside from a quick dream of being a dinosaur trainer, I never imagined that I would be anything other than a doctor! But what kind of doctor?
Chiropractic has been a significant part of my life for many years and the choice seemed like a perfect fit. I decided to become a chiropractor because I wanted the ability to set a schedule that allowed me to truly get to know my patients and their health. I enjoy the flexibility of owning a clinic and truly hope that patients see the difference.
I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2004, where I studied psychology and chemistry. While at UNI, I had the opportunity to perform biochemical research at Georgetown University. I began attending Northwestern Health Sciences University in Fall 2005, and received my doctorate in 2008. While at NWHSU, I became certified in chiropractic acupuncture.
In July 2011, I completed all necessary course work and final examination through the Kennedy Decompression Technique to become the ONLY certified spinal decompression therapy practitioner in the Des Moines area, and one of three in central Iowa! I felt that completing this certification was vitally important to ensure a high standard of patient care. While any doctor can own a decompression table, it is the proper diagnosis, positioning, and technique that makes spinal decompression successful for the patient.
I have a passion for working with patients who have fertility concerns. My work with fertility started with one patient asking if I could help, and has blossomed into a focus. I stay up-to-date with the latest journals and continuing education to best help all of the couples who seek my help.
I utilize Diversified adjusting method (hands-on) for most patients. In some cases, patients are unable or prefer to not be manually adjusted. For this, I use a Chiro-IQ instrument that involves no turning, twisting, popping, or clicking, but puts an impulse into the joint to help restore function.
I live on my grandparents' century farm, with my dog, Gus, house cat, Sammie, and several not-so-tame farm cats. If I'm not working at my farm or treating patients at the clinic, you can most likely find me traveling with my husband, Chris, or going to horse shows. I am the proud owner of two half-Arabian Country English show horses, "Moose" and "Shaboom."
